Nanami Sushi Diner & Onigiri is a hidden gem in the heart of New Orleans, offering a unique dining experience that transports you to Japan. As a sushi enthusiast, I was immediately drawn to this restaurant, and my experience exceeded my expectations. The chef, Yuwa Tomihira, is a master of his craft, and his passion for sushi is evident in every dish. What sets Nanami apart is its focus on traditional Japanese cuisine, with a menu that showcases the freshest and most seasonal ingredients. The restaurant's atmosphere is serene and straightforward, with a laser focus on great fish presented the right way. It feels like a Japanese restaurant, rather than just a restaurant that serves sushi. One of the things that immediately stood out to me was the chef's attention to detail. He scores the seafood with tight slice marks, for instance, which widens the surface as it hits the palate, amplifying the pleasure. This is best demonstrated with raw scallop nigiri, which became a flower of soft ruffles by the time it was served. The menu at Nanami is vast and changing, with three dozen or more choices, including kamasu (Japanese barracuda), isaka (three line grunt), and inada (young yellowtail). The chef's connections to Japan help him source these ingredients, and he takes pride in offering a unique dining experience. The bento box I initially sought out was a joy to alternate between cool bites and bits of tempura broccoli and juicy kaarage fried chicken. It's a richly varied meal of orderly grazing for under $20. Nanami remains BYOB while a permit application is in the works. Really Really Nice Wines a few blocks away makes a handy stop off, and the nearby Breaux Mart grocery has lately upped its sake selection. In my opinion, Nanami Sushi Diner & Onigiri is a must-visit for any sushi lover in New Orleans. The chef's passion for his craft, combined with the unique dining experience, makes it a truly special place. If you're looking for a sushi bar that offers a unique and traditional dining experience, Nanami is the place to be.
